take one of two paths in managing diversity. In the name of equality and fairness, they encourage (and expect) women and people of color to blend in. Or they set
them apart in jobs that relate specifically to their backgrounds, assigning them, for example, to areas that require them to interface with clients or customers of the same identity group"
(p.79). In some way, both approaches seem disingenuous. If there is a meld of people, there should not be so much attention to the concept. In other words, there should
be a sense of color-blindness, a whimsical workplace where all people get along, and where issues of race or gender or ethnicity never comes up. That of course is an
ideal world. First, it is important to define the concept. Goffney (2005) writes: "Diversity in the workplace today refers to any dimension that differentiates people from one another" (p. 149).
The primary reason why a diverse workplace presents challenges is due to the fact that people of different backgrounds have different expectations. There is also partially a class, gender
and racial struggle within many industries. Yet, at the forefront is the simple notion of just getting along. When it comes to multiculturalism, there is a sense of attracting a
diverse workforce, meeting with affirmative action mandates and incorporating basic sensitivity training into a company. A good example of a shift is on the television show Rescue Me where a
diversity class is initiated in a group of diverse workers simply because a woman complained that she was mistreated. She was called a nasty name related to gender. Ironically, while
racial slurs abound on the show, the group is cohesive. There is no problem with this particular group that one would think would possess numerous communication gaps. Instead, they are
