the conflict using the psychodynamic theory of interpersonal relations. Discussion The conflict: A conflict arose between two co-workers due to a cultural and religious misunderstanding. If left unresolved, it will
impact the company they work for, bring down morale and create additional problems. The situation: John asked Mara, a new employee, to have lunch with him and a group
of co-workers. She refused politely. The same thing occurred the next day, and the next, until John began to get angry and said that Mara thought she was too good
to eat with her co-workers. Mara answered that she was observing Ramadan, a Muslim ritual lasting a month, during which no food is eaten while the sun is in the
sky. She said she had not wanted to admit to being a Muslim until she had been at the company a little longer and knew the people better. John
began to tease her, but then it grew to be much more serious until his comments about Muslims were offensive to Mara. At that point she considered discussing it with
their immediate supervisor, but decided to "ride it out" and see if things improved. For one thing, she was still very new in the company and was reluctant to "make
waves"; for another, as a woman and a Muslim she was not used to asserting herself. Why it needs to be improved: There are several things that need to be
improved here. First, Johns behavior is bordering on harassment, and that type of behavior is always undesirable in any company. Second, the hostility between the two is obviously having a
negative impact on their working relationship. Third, the hostility is making the rest of the department uneasy. Finally, Americans in general tend to be xenophobic, a tendency which has been
