discusses an incident of workplace bullying and the issues surrounding it. Discussion The scenario described here is fictional, but typical. An employee, Susan, came to work only to hear herself
described by her boss as "a soccer mom wannabe," a reference to the fact that Susan had been late the day before because her little girl was sick and Susan,
who is divorced, had to leave work and take the girl home from daycare. When Susan politely commented that she wasnt a soccer mom, "just a mom," her boss said,
"Whats the matter, cant you take a joke?" and walked away. Thats how it started. Now Susans boss takes every opportunity possible to pick on her. He makes demeaning comments;
he misleads others about her ability; sometimes he even lies about her performance. His tactics have coalesced into a dirty campaign "to exact their intended effect: to make [Susan] quit
or get fired" (Rossheim, 2006). The effect of the bullying on Susan is ugly: normally a self-assured and attractive young woman, she is pale and thin; she jumps when
people talk to her or when the phone rings, and several times she has burst into tears in her bosss office as he lectures her yet again on some imaginary
thing shes done. She cant eat, and her job troubles are now ruining her home life as well. The last straw was this morning, when the boss called a meeting.
He had no prepared agenda, but used the time to launch into a vicious personal attack against Susan, calling her incompetent, stupid and demanding that she choose once and for
all whether shes a mother or an account executive. He told outright lies about some of the projects shes done, and the meeting ended with Susan sitting in stunned silence,
