opinions that are held about the criminal justices system, with arguments that the law is too weak on criminals, ignores victims and does not have uniformity. These are issues which cannot be changed by a worker with the system. To work as a freelancer within the UK criminal justices system, with either criminals and/or victims the worker will need to understand not only the system, but also the way in which they need to balance competing needs. Influences that many be seen within the system directly or indirectly on the way they treat those within the system. There also needs to be consideration of the political and the ethical concerns. The system is one that is more focused on those committing crimes. Issues such as looking for underlining causes such as mental health issues before a case goes to court have gained a great deal of attention (Winchester, 2002). This is also especially true of young offenders (Winchester, 2002). However, more attention is being paid with concepts and practice such as restorative justice, as seen with the document " Restorative justice: Helping to meet local needs" published in March 2005 (CJS, 2005). To consider this we need to look at the elements that concern those who work with the output of the criminal justice system. The inconsistencies of the judiciary and the difficulties the criminal justice system, such as the way the offenders are released only to re-offend, as highlighted by Metropolitan Police, Sir John Stevens (Ford, 2002). For the worker working with the criminals and the victims the process has already taken place, it is this situation where they will get involved.
