film with regard to its portrayal of women (and men) in the workplace. Discussion The main female characters in the film are Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton)
and Violet Newstead (Lily Tomlin). Judy is just coming back into the work force after a nasty divorce from her husband Dick Radman (Lawrence Pressman) (Null, 1999). She ends up
working with Doralee and Violet in a large corporation; their mutual boss Franklin Hart Jr. is played by Dabney Coleman (Null, 1999). Hart is a "fine, lunatic villain, a minibrained
tom cat so in the grip of his petty passions that hes not above spilling his pencils on the floor to be able to watch Miss Parton, down on her
hands and knees, her cleavage exposed, retrieving them" (Canby, 1980). He is sexist, dishonest and smarmy and after Violet loses yet another promotion she should have had because he promotes
men instead of women, the three ladies decide to teach him a lesson. The plot becomes convoluted and wobbles between comedy and outright farce, with the women kidnapping Hart and
holding him in his own home (Canby, 1980). But all ends well: hes shipped off to Brazil and the office, which is running much more smoothly with the women in
charge, is a much happier place (Canby, 1980). The film is uneven and the sequence where the women kidnap Hart takes on a peculiarly ugly tone that seems at odds
with the much lighter tone of the rest of the film. However, this paper isnt a critique of the film, but an examination of the way it handles its characters.
