This situation can be traced to an interconnected relationship between different systemic problems in American culture. Examining poverty, particularly the situations of the working poor, from a system/ecological approach reveals sociocultural dynamics that go to the heart of failing in the capitalist system. reveals sociocultural dynamics that go to the heart of failing in the capitalist system. A Systems/Ecological perspective General systems theory holds that people are in constant interaction with
various systems in their environment. These systems include "family, friends, work, social service, political, employment religious, goods and services and educational systems" (Zastro and Kirst-Ashman 5). This perspective, i.e. systems
theory, provides the basis on which an ecological perspective is formulated (Zastro and Kirst-Ashman 12). Just as general systems theory relates to a variety of subsystems, the ecological model
can be considered as an "offshoot or interpretation of general systems theory," in that it also refer4s to dynamic social interaction and relationships (Zastro and Kirst-Ashman 12). The ecological
perspective focuses on individuals and their families, while systems theory assumes a broader perspective (Zastro and Kirst-Ashman 12). As this suggests, many experts view an ecological approach as being virtually
synonymous with a systems approach, in that both terms refer to "nested" systems, in which subsystems specifically refer to relationships between human begins and their environments (Anderson, Carter and
Lowe 289). A macro systems look at capitalism and poverty David Shipler, in his text The Working Poor, describes the way that inter-related systems can interact with each other
