find considerable deviation between worker rights in the more technologically developed and progressive countries and those in lesser developed and less progressive countries of the world. Worker rights in
the U.S., of course, are dictated to a large degree by federal and state law (Applebaum and Batt, 1994). These laws determine the minimum wage that workers can be
paid, the maximum amount of time on the job per day and per week, the conditions in which they can work. Handicapped workers benefit from laws that provide access
to facilities and prevent discrimination in hiring based on the disability. Minorities and women benefit from equal opportunity laws. In short, workers rights laws can be as broad
reaching as prohibiting the employment of children or as narrow in focus as dictating specifics such as how much break time must be allowed for so many hours of a
shift. While some laws relating to workers rights are straightforward, however, others are more complex and sometimes even require court intervention to decide. Workers rights, therefore, is a
complex issue and one that must be explored with a number of considerations in mind. One of the most commonly discussed realms of
workers rights if fair pay. Federal law specifies a minimum wage that a worker can be paid. This law is sometimes overridden by state laws, however (Chicago Tribune,
2003). In June 2003, in fact, that there were eleven states that established a minimum wage higher than that established by federal law (Chicago Tribune, 2003). On the
