a negative condition, for as one author notes, "The term workaholic is often used in a positive sense to describe employees who come in early and stay late" (Chang, 2004;
56). In the past such work behavior was seen as a good thing. But, recently the idea of spending too many hours, essentially married to ones work, is a very
negative reality that can take a serious toll on families of workaholics. The following paper examines the condition, why it occurs, and how it is seen as a problem.
Workaholism There are perhaps many different reasons as to why workaholism occurs. First off, we live in a time when being successful and making good money is considered the
ultimate goal. People who have worked hard to get where they are in their workplace are driven it seems to make more and more money. They see that as a
validation of their success as a human being and if they slack off of such work involvement or commitment they will cease to feel good about themselves and their contributions
to family and society. From another perspective we can see how some people may simply love what they do so much that they become obsessed with their work. They
are addicted to their work because it gives them a great deal of pleasure and challenges them constantly. They may not necessarily be in their job for the money, but
for the love of the job itself and through their work they validate themselves as human beings. These are perhaps the two biggest reasons why people become workaholics and
regardless of the reasoning behind the condition, the need to work incredibly extensive hours and to make work a part of their lives 24 hours a day, the problems are
