on their cell phones or home computers. Also, more people than ever telecommute. With a greater tendency for work and home life to merge, what are the consequences of employees
having their work and personal lives intertwined? Obviously, people experience more stress than ever before. Employees are accessible all of the time due to the advent of the cell phone
and the availability of email. When an executive goes home for the weekend, it is therefore difficult to leave work at the office. In 1990, Barbara Block (1990) predicted that
"the boundaries between work and home will fade" (p.26). This does seem to be the case today. That said, two career couples sometimes define home and work boundaries a
bit differently (Marshack, 1994). Indeed, some people are better able to create those boundaries than others. Obviously, certain careers preclude leaving work at the office. Doctors and therapists are often
on call, and they must respond to emergencies and patient questions at all hours of the day, and sometimes during the night. It is in fact the higher level jobs
which are the most difficult to shake. Someone who works at a convenience store scanning items can shut off his cell phone and ignore the home phone if he knows
his boss wants him to come in early. This individual may be more stressed due to the fact that he has to duck calls to keep boundaries intact. Yet, someone
in a high level position with a lot of responsibility will not do well at work by ignoring the phone. They often must deal with crises on their days off.
