However, in the event that such hearing loss does occur, it is important to understand the impact this has on the individual. Work-Related Hearing Loss - The Problem Work-related hearing loss is a critical workplace safety and health issue (Work-Related Hearing Loss, 2002). In fact, "the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the occupational safety and health community named hearing loss one of the 21 priority areas for research in the next century" (Work-Related Hearing Loss, 2002). It is important to note that noise induced hearing loss is 100% preventable but, once this type of hearing loss has occurred, it is permanent and irreversible (Work-Related Hearing Loss, 2002). Therefore, clearly prevention is important.
