do more harm than good if implemented in a manner that lacks cultural competency. For instance, despite official discourse in work-life policy beginning to recognize the importance of "gender-neutral language",
especially in regards to policies intended to work around the needs of caregivers, many programs still display a grim lack of cultural competency (Smithson & Stokoe, 2005). Studies indicate that
flexibility programs designed to allow workers the flexibility they need to provide care for children, sick partners, or aging family members are largely written with female employees in mind; this
ignores the cultural reality that men have caregiver responsibilities just as often (Smithson & Stokoe, 2005). Clearly, employees would stand to benefit from a more culturally conscious implementation of work-life
policies that considers all dimensions of race, gender, age, and cultural background. Benefits to employers are considerable as well. Recent reports indicate that as the workplace becomes more culturally diverse,
those organizations which are best able to manage diversity will be those to develop a competitive advantage going into the future, especially in regards to "appropriately positioning advertising, adapting products
and services, and ultimately, winning new markets" (Hancock, 2008). Therefore, employers should recognize the value in developing a culturally competent workplace as well. 2) Explain the process for
