In times past it was every managers desire to find one or more workaholics, those who not only put the job first in their lives but
also put it ahead of everything else that today we view as being of higher priority, including rest, relationships, recreation and even family. Todays managers understand that the multi-dimensional,
rested and more well-rounded employee is the better one. S/he generally is more productive and more creative, and certainly is more pleasant for those internal and external to the
company to deal with on a daily basis. There is evidence that insufficient balance between work and personal life also negatively affects the
individuals decision-making process. Certainly those who may be sleep deficient or have not taken a day off in months are likely to make poor decisions because of their fatigue,
but a 2007 internal survey at Deloitte & Touche USA found that the absence of a good work-life balance also can be detrimental to the individuals ethical base (Gurchiek, 2007).
Deloitte & Touche chairman Sharon L. Allen states, "If someone invests all of their time and energy into their jobs, it may have the unintended consequence of making them
dependent on their jobs for everything, including their sense of personal worth" (Gurchiek, 2007). Another ethical perspective is that of the role of the employer. Most work-life balance
issues result from decisions of the individual employee to place increasing energy into work to the exclusion of everything else, but some jobs require the same. It is a
