However, despite the rhetoric there appears to be difficulty with the implementing of a true work life balance that is having a negative impact on the quality of women employees life to a greater extent that the male employees (Bilton et al, 2000). The workplace in Australia has been changing, which has also increased the important of the work life balance from the perspective of the employee in order to meet their home obligation, a particular issue for women (Pocock, 2003). The level of women in the workplace has been increasing over the last few decades, driven by a number of pressures including economic pressures to increase household income, but there has not been any easing on the home duties that the women are expected, the concept of what a proper mother, and a proper carer is the same as when the culture saw more women at home (Haralambos and Holborn , 2004; Bilton et al, 2000). The change in the workplace has been aggravated by the fact that there has not been a change in the home commiserate with the workplace; men have not been taking on a greater care and house work to share the work load leading to a position where many women have two jobs (Haralambos and Holborn , 2004; Pocock, 2003). As the majority of households in Australia are family households this is indicative of a high number of women having a duel role that could be aided by a good work life balance (Pocock, 2003).
