essential for human flourishing? The online edition of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary [http://www.merriam-webster.com] defines "work," when used as a noun, as an "activity in which one exerts strength or faculties to
do or perform something," indicating also that it is also "The labor, task or duty that is ones accustomed means of livelihood." However, in Western culture, work has come to
mean much more than these dictionary definitions. The theologies formulated by Martin Luther in the fifteen century and John Calvin in the sixteenth portray work as visible sign of
Gods grace. As both Calvinist and Lutheran theologies proposed that only those predestined for salvation by Gods grace could be saved, and there was no way of knowing who these
individuals were, the notion developed that predestination could be discerned by observing an individuals lifestyle. Therefore, if one worked hard, was devout in attending church and lived frugally, these actions
proclaims them as one of the Elect, that is, one predestined for salvation. Work became equated in the public mindset with religion and righteousness, becoming a defining factor in the
development of modern society. Nevertheless, not all modern philosophers have accepted the idea that this conceptualization of work is the be-all end-all of existence and essential to human flourishing. For
example, Victor E. Frankl in his text Mans Search for Meaning indicates the message that the supreme task in life for individuals is to find meaning in their lives. Frankl
