warrant respectful consideration of the Islam religious experience in the workplace, sadly the opposite has been true in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York Citys World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Since then, American public opinion has unfairly characterized these devout Muslims as over-zealous terrorists. However, the reality is that traditional Islam practices focus on peace and equality, as envisioned by the prophet Muhammad, who preached unity of followers that is rooted in faith and loyalty to Allah (Fellows, 1979). Before considering how the Muslim religious experience impacts upon the work environment, it is recommended to first examine its foundation, which is cemented by Islams five pillars. First, there is the shahada, which is a public expression of faith that Allah is the only god and Muhammad is his sole prophet (Lampman, 2001; Fellows, 1979). Second is the salat or private prayer performed five times daily that serves as an affirmation of the Islamic faith (Lampman, 2001). The giving of alms or zakat is the third pillar, which prohibits making loans or paying any interest because Muslims believe all money comes from God (Lampman, 2001). Fourth is the Ramadan month-long period of fasting, which recreates the first communications between God and Muhammad (Lampman, 2001). Finally, and of lesser impact to daily life is the Muslim requirement of making a pilgrimage or hajj to the birthplace of Islam, Mecca. Islam is not a religion reserved for one day of worship per week; it is a scriptural blueprint that instructs followers how to eat, dress, and conduct personal hygiene (Kobeisy, 2004).
