an old company by any standards. Opening in 1909 in Britain, its American parent already had been in operation for more than 30 years. The "five and dime" portion of the American name translated to "3 and 6" in Britain, but otherwise the British version of Woolworths was virtually identical to its American parent in the beginning. That changed over the years, however. The businesses were separate though they shared a common name (F.W. Woolworth), and they grew in very different directions in the early decades of the 20th century. The American parent doggedly clung to its original approach to business despite changes in demographics, markets and the entire retail industry. The advent of Kmart serving growing suburban populations was troublesome; entry of Wal-Mart into the larger towns in which Woolworths was located was devastating. The last American store closed in the early 1990s. The British group changed in response to market changes when the American group did not; it still survives today but also still struggles. Woolworths Market in 2004 One author describes Woolworths as a company with an "awful business model razor thin margins and a poor market segment" (Thats the wonder of Woolworths, 2005; p. 28).
