Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. The extent to which isolation is such a critical component to the development and maintenance of an androgynous mind in Woolf's A Room of One's Own is both grand and far-reaching; that society's gender encoding wholly precludes Orlando's ability to attain mental androgyny speaks to the constant – if not invisible – undercurrent of judgment and forced conformation people experience when they go against conventional sex roles. Woolf illustrates how society compels men to be men and women to be women; for androgyny to exist beyond these stringent stipulations, it can only do so in the only place where such social dictate ceases to exist: in isolation. stipulations, it can only do so in the only place where such social dictate ceases to exist: in isolation. Confused by what their
gender is supposed to reflect, Woolf illustrates how androgynous individuals are trapped between two very different worlds; if they are to assume only one side or the other as their
sole representation, they would deny a very significant portion of themselves with regard to their overall personal identity. Indeed, to choose between masculine and feminine attributes is not as
easy as merely applying a conscious choice; rather, the emotional and biological dictates are what ultimately determine the direction any given individual might follow. To remain strictly androgynous, however,
is to invite social criticism and intolerance; as such, isolation is the only place where these emotional wounds do not exist. An androgynous
individual relies upon social acceptance just the same as other more gender-specific people; when he or she receives disapproval and scorn for having followed what comes most naturally, he or
she is then placed in a critical position forced to conform to social dictates. This, it can readily be argued, represents one of the most damaging components of an
outwardly androgynous lifestyle: unwarranted narrow-mindedness. The fear associated with such underlying emotional trauma leaves little room for social approval for those who do not fall into one of two
