II entailed, she was also obsessed with writing her new novel, Between the Acts. While her diary at this time indicates a dark and foreboding turning of mind, paradoxically, Woolf
also indicates that the impending doom added a degree of "gaiety and recklessness to the random daily life" routine (Marder 466). As this suggests, Between the Acts is a
highly unusual novel that presents a multifaceted view of English village life. This examination of Woolfs text focuses on one thematic aspect of this complex work, which is the role
of community and how Woolf perceives this concept. This analysis reveals that Woolfs prose demonstrates the tension that she perceived between individuality and separateness and the idea that society
can be viewed as a unified whole, showing that, in this work, Woolf thoroughly examines this dichotomy, pointing to the lessons that she believed could be derived from this complex
