While there is considerable humor in the film, throughout the camera techniques, mise-en-scene, and imagery combine to underscore the theme of pessimism and the view that religion does not offer effective answers to lifes problems. At one point, Dolores, Judahs lover, says that the eyes are the "windows of the soul" (Roche 271). However, when Judah removes any incriminating evidence of his presence from his lovers apartment after she has been murdered, and sees her body, he says that nothing is behind Doloress dead eyes but a "black void" (Roche 271). This void, which us mirrored back to Judah, signifies the not only the nonexistence of Dolores, but also the "emptiness of traditional religious rhetoric" (Roche 271). Judah ensures that Dolores is completely erased from his life by burning her letter in his fireplace. Immediately after the audience learns that Dolores is be murdered, the camera cuts to a close=up of the fire (Roche 271). Music also underscores the films themes, as Schuberts Quartet no. 15, which has a sad, haunting tone, is played during Doloress murder (Roche 271). However, jaunty jazz tunes play over the credits, signifying that Judah has recovered from his burden of guilt and is prepared to get on with and enjoy his life (Roche 271). Judahs duplicity and criminality is contrasted against the character of Cliff, an aspiring filmmaker, who is having difficulty completing his documentary since its subject committed suicide by jumping out of a window.
