Gulf War that liberals sum up in a sentence like "war for oil" is way off base, something confirmed by Woodwards keen insights. Not only did the U.S. not make
decisions based on such frivolous ideas, or make decisions abruptly, but the decision making process is displayed as a rather precise and well thought out procedure. This work highlights
the idea that the Bush administration was effective in utilizing a defense planning system in order to identify political objectives and then apply military resources to accomplish those goals.
Perhaps the greatest insight gleaned from this well written and entertaining piece of non-fiction is that the government is not run either in a haphazard way or in any simple
way. It is an intricate government with rules and regulations. It is not as if George Bush merely contemplating objectives and had received support from earlier presidents and other confidants.
Rather, he used his cabinet and other support around him. The Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State, the Joint Chiefs of Staffs and so forth each played a significant
role in the outcome as did the National Security Adviser. That list just the tip of the iceberg as many people are involved. The meetings that ensued laid the groundwork
for meaningful discussions where the president and others would go point by point over the reasons for the military action. Clearly, the operation in the gulf was not done on
a whim. Many Americans, and people around the world for that matter, wait to hear what the president has to say about a military conflict. While he is of
course the commander in chief, he does not make his military decisions alone. If this book does anything it is to emphasize that fact with actual details and candor. There
