Two years after Wilsons election, the United States became involved in the Mexican Revolution. Wilson used American Armed Forces to intervene in Mexico twice
- in 1914 and again in 1916. The reasons were to protect the economic and strategic interests of the United States. American business in Mexico was flourishing at the time.
There was also an issue of several American sailors being arrested in Tampico. President Wilson was very angry about his (Eisenhower 1993). The
revolution in Mexico was led by Victoriana Huerta. Huerta and his followers murdered Francisco Madero, the president, during a bloody rebel take-over. Wilson first tried to contain the situation by
refusing to acknowledge Huerta as the president of the country and at the same time, he tried to force Huerta to hold free elections in Mexico. Huerta refused and took
over the country as a dictator. Wilson ordered American Armed Forces to seize the custom houses in Veracruz. Marines and sailors attempted to do so but were met by hundreds
of Mexican protesters. The next day American ships bombarded Veracruz. American troops occupied Veracruz for six months. This action effectively cut off Huertas supply of arms coming in from Europe.
