The natural earthly world became the object of similar pursuits. Explanations were formed to account for the way things were. Stories and folklore evolved telling why things were
the way they were. Topics such as why the skunk had a stripe, why the crow was black, why the bear walked upright, and innumerable more were categorized and
organize to become a quasi science/religion of the day. Similar explanations, names, stories, and activities were being formulated by other men from other cultures and within the same culture
at that same point in time and this pattern of naming and explaining would continue on into the future. Primitive peoples wondered, for example, if perhaps the turtles they
saw foraging in the mud under the surface of the lakes and ponds, sometimes carrying little bits of that mud back to the surface, were responsible for the creation of
the earth itself. Thus originate the creation story of many of the Native American tribes, that once the earth was completely covered by water and that it was the
turtle who dove under those waters and brought up the mud which would become the land masses of the world. These people observed the ease with which mud could
be used to make their cooking pots. They wondered if this same mud could have been used by a superior being to fabricate the earth, the animals, and people
themselves. This very explanation is common in a number of cultures. Today our explanations of the creation of the universe and its various components has become extremely complex.
