to work during World War I, it wasnt until the Second World War that they began to work outside the home in great numbers. In the late 1940s and 1950s,
the workplace once again was male-dominated, as the GIs came home and took "their" jobs back from the women. But by then women had discovered the freedom and economic independence
that bringing in their own money meant, and they refused to give up and go back to homemaking - unless they truly wanted to do so. Now of course the
cost of living is so high that most women work out of necessity. Despite this, many people still feel that a womans real job is being a wife and mother,
and that if she doesnt have a family she is somehow missing out, or isnt a "real" woman-whatever that means. But the fact that we still, in 2009, consider some
jobs "unsuitable" for women only goes to show that there are still societal constructs that tell us what the appropriate roles are for the genders. Argument 1: Womens work is
defined by men and as such, is often low-paying and difficult, and bears a relation to housework. "Womens work" is usually considered to be things like housecleaning, cooking, caring for
children, taking care of elderly relatives, and generally making a home. When these skills are translated into the workplace, they put women in similar "caring" roles-as counselors, teachers, human resources
personnel, nurses and so on. The tough, supposedly more difficult and challenging positions go to men, who are not as "emotional" as women and can therefore handle the difficult decisions
that go with running a company, or a country. Its no accident that these are also the positions that pay well, ensuring womens perpetual inability to break free of male
