poets in history have been male. And as such many argue that there is no womans voice in poetry, or that women have been merely trying to copy into a
mans genre of literary art. The truth, however, is that poetry is very much a form of artistic expression that carries the voice of the poet. As such male poetry
possesses a mans voice and female poetry possesses a womans voice. This is not to say that all poetry is about male or female issues in presenting a voice, but
rather perspectives are often clearly feminine or masculine in terms of perceptions and presentation. In addition, the womans voice in poetry often reflect ideals and dreams and positions that are
unique to women. In light of this the womans voice may well often address social status, and other issues that reflect the women in society. The following paper examines several
Canadian poetesses and discusses how they obviously possess a womans voice in poetry. The women examined are Dorothy Livesay, P.K. Page, and Margaret Atwood. Livesay "Dorothy Livesay
(1909-1996) was a major figure in the rise of modernist poetry in Canada...From the radical politics of the Communist Party of Canada in the 1930s, she migrated to the socialist
politics of the New Democratic Party of Canada after the Second World War, and she maintained a feminist perspective throughout her life" (Kelly). In this we can see something of
her nature and see that while she may have possessed a voice that was universal, as it related to politics, she was also a woman who argued for womens issues
