Office of Medical History, 2000). The impact nurses made upon the battle environment in general and the soldiers in particular is both grand and far-reaching; that their presence was not
only critical to morale but also integral to the overall health and wellbeing of the infantry speaks to the growing importance of women in wartime as left by the legacy
of Florence Nightingale. Had it not been for Nightingales attempts to humanize the medical profession in the nineteenth century, there is no telling where contemporary society would be with
regard to humane and appropriate medical care. Her efforts were instrumental in establishing cleanliness, fresh air and nutritional food for the soldiers of the Crimean War, whose collective fate
- as with the fate of World War I soldiers - would have otherwise been a lingering existence in private homes or disreputable hospitals. Under her wings, she took
care of the soldiers while at the same time training other women to "nurse" them back to health, a progression that served instrumental for guiding some thirty thousand nurses to
