States, women hid the fact they were women in order to be involved fighting wars, and in more recent times women have slowly become integrated, in some situations, into the
military, actually serving out duties that are more male dominated than was the case in the past. The following paper examines the history and present condition of womens rights in
the military. Womens Rights in the Military One author notes, "When discussing the history of women in combat, one might think of Joan of Arc who in 1429,
at age 17, successfully led French troops into battle against the English. Hundreds of women disguised themselves as men to fight in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars" (Willens, 1996). Beginning
with the American Revolution it is noted that women primarily played the role of nurses in the war, presumably as volunteers and not as part of the actual military. However,
they also, as noted in the introduction, acted subversively in some cases to become more actively involved. As one author indicates, "Women serve on the battlefield as nurses, water bearers,
cooks, laundresses and saboteurs" Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, Inc., 2007). They clearly had no rights in the military during this time, especially considering they had no
real rights in the society either, not even possessing the right to vote at that time. In the 1880s there were two women in particular who are known in
