States the 20th century saw the most powerful developments in relationship to women and their rights. They obtained the right to vote, rights to work and become employed in many
of the same jobs as men, and even the right to have use birth control and have abortions. In Ernest Hemingways short story Hills Like White Elephants the story deals
with the reality of abortion. Written in 1927, it was a time when women did not have any legal ability to obtain an abortion, and the story offers up a
very private and powerful look at what abortion means/meant to women. The following paper examines womens rights in the 20th century and Hemingways story. Womens Rights and
Hills Like White Elephants 1. Womens rights in the early 20th century. As noted, the 20th century was a time fo great change
for women. As one author notes, "American women have had the right to vote since 1920" although "their political roles have been minimal" (Womens International Center). In many ways it
was the end of the Victorian Era wherein women were ultimately and completely controlled by a male society. They began to embark on many paths that were previously unavailable to
women: "During the early 20th century the term new woman came to be used in the popular press. More young women than ever were going to school, working both in
blue- and white-collar jobs, and living by themselves in city apartments. Some social critics feared that feminism, which they interpreted to mean the end of the home and family, was
