society since the earliest days of civilization. Many of the fundamental cultural norms that reinforced the oppression of women in ancient times are still evident today, despite what advancements towards
equality have been achieved. This paper will explore the evolution of womens rights throughout the ages. This paragraph helps the student introduce the idea of womens rights in the ancient
world. In the ancient world, womens rights were virtually non-existent, especially in the formal sense. Even in more progressive ancient societies such as the Greek culture, women were typically excluded
from the political sphere and also tended to face compartmentalization in terms of "career" or societal role that they might assume. For brief periods of time, this was not the
case; for example, at one point in ancient Sparta, 40% of the land belonging to the Spartans was owned by women (Fleck & Hanssen 2009, p. 221). However, even this
anomaly has a simple economic explanation related to the conquering of lands; in other words, women were granted rights and social status only when it was convenient to men to
grant it to them (Flek & Hanssen 2009, p. 221). Eventually, patriarchal power structures began to be questioned in the Victorian era. Unfortunately, despite attention being paid to the
question of womens rights for the first time, the actual social conditions experienced by women didnt change much at all. Women during this time were typically restricted to domestic roles,
working in home and tending to familial responsibilities (Horany 2002). In those rare instances when women did work outside of the home, it was usually fulfilling the same jobs in
