Though women of lower socioeconomic status are less likely to pursue educational advancements, including adult education opportunities, women across cultures and classes have experienced oppression that has led to a lack of access to education. Existing research shows the correlation between different countrys cultures, the role that Muslim faith plays in that culture, and the impacts of Western ideals on the views of women and the need for education. The research question utilized in this study will be: Has womens oppression in the Middle East been a factor in their adult education? Specifically, this study will assess the factors that lead to the oppression of women in specific cultures in the Middle East, including the countries of Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, and will relate the oppression of women to varying levels of Muslim influence on the overall culture and the subsequent impact on the views of educating women. This information will be utilized to determine whether specific countries have a greater likelihood of providing educational opportunities for women, especially in reference to adult education. Attendance in adult education programs in these countries is male dominated and this must be considered in the development of programming. This question provides a foundation for assessing educational programs and their utility in meeting the needs of a growing number of women entering the workforce. In addition, views of this issue will also help to determine factors that negatively impact some countries ability to maintain educated and highly trained workforce populations while excluding larger populations of women from educational programming (Moghadam, 2003).
