an equal environment. One defining aspect is that of gender, and whilst there are recognition of some gender issues, these are often overlooked, being seen the extremist concerns of feminists.
However, there are many issues that are gender based, which may be seen as more pertinent to women or female students than male students at collage level. There are
few who would argue that even in todays enlightened world the dominant paradigm is still that of a patriarchal society (Walby, 1990). Issues may be as basic as that of
discrimination, where there are older structures adhered to and stereotypes imposed or sought be faculty members or even other students. The results of this may be far reaching and include
the regulation of importance of subjects generally considered feminine, and the exclusion of women or negative treatment on traditionally masculine courses. This may then develop into other issues, such as
those of outright discrimination backed up by negative behaviour, issues also related may be those of self esteem. There are then additional issues that are more likely to effect women
than men, but may not be constrained only to men. Issues such as family commitments and childcare are issues that are more likely to face women than men, as are
some health issues, from contraceptive advice to dealing with conditions such as Chlamydia. Safety is also more of an issue for female students. There are many ways in which
a womens resource centre may respond to these needs. In many ways its existence alone will raise awareness within the collage and indicate the culture that if not already present
