themselves. It is no longer done just to please or attract a man either, but rather, to look sharp and receive acclaim from the masses. In essence, much of fashion
is entered into for approval from the society as a whole as well as to exemplify status. Still, fashion is not just about status and approval. It is an entity
with many nuances. Fashion has in fact become more complex as time goes on, and has also become more colorful as well (Steindorf 16). Throughout time, clothing and fashion accessories
have been associated with particular edicts, social prestige, climate, class, and economic status (16). All of these factors have played a a role in fashion through the ages (16). In
Western Europe, for example, clothes began as totally utilitarian but quickly progressed to including highly decorative items that connoted wealth and status (16). Today, throughout the world, fashion may be
associated with prestige and power. Only money can buy diamonds and gold and rare furs. People decorate themselves with things that are worth a great deal of cash and even
on the hip hop scene, gold teeth are something to envy. In some way, this is as true today as it has been since the nineteenth century. One has to
wonder how much fashion has changed. How are things different from what they were during the nineteenth century and what does consumerism have to do with anything? It seems
