that is changing, it is changing only slowly, and the struggle for recognition and respect is ongoing. This paper briefly explores some of the issues facing women in management positions. Discussion The changing role of women in management reflects basic changes in society, and the way in which it defines "appropriate" roles for men and women. In general, women didnt enter the work force in large numbers until World War II, when they took over the jobs of the men who had gone to fight. After the war, many of the women were expected to just go home again and let the men have their jobs back. Many did, but others remained in the workforce, and the idea of women working began to seem less strange. However, it was by no means universally accepted, and as late as 1971, "a comprehensive study of 144 texts used in private and public schools throughout the United States portrayed boys/men as doers and girls/women as helpers" (Allen, Srinivas and Sakamoto, 1997, p. 123). Other facts were not much brighter. In 1994, women still earned only 76% of the wages men did; of the "200 highest-paid Chief Executives in the United States, none are women"; womens raises lag behind those given to men; women filed the vast majority of sexual harassment cases, illustrating the fact that sexism still remains a very real problem for women in the workplace; only "5 percent of top managers at Fortune 2,000 companies are women"; only 7.5% of board members of the top 100 U.S. companies are women; and most damning of all, "70% of the women involved in a Business Week poll identified the male-dominated corporate culture as an obstacle to their success," with one-third of those responding saying that they expected the number of female executives at ...
