which these were displayed also changed. In the newly created industrial cities, the new proletarian family became increasingly concerned about education and would come to demand better housing (Hanagan,
1995). There were fewer demands for child labor (Hanagan, 1995). There was also a falling mortality, and soon, new burdens would be placed on the working-class families (Hanagan, 1995).
This would lead to a situation where working-class families would decrease in size (Hanagan, 1995). In other words, the families were not as apt to have six or eight or
ten children as they once were. There was no farm to tend. There was nothing for the children to do. In fact, rather than assets, children were increasingly becoming liabilities.
It is not that the parents no longer loved their offspring, but rather in an economic sense, they were mouths to feed as opposed to productive members of a
team. But while the lower and middle classes struggled still, there was great wealth that had been made and this is apparent as a pattern which has reemerged throughout history.
Fortunes were made from the new technology which surfaced during the industrial revolution. In fact, the industrial revolution had created a change so significant socially, economically and technologically, that nothing
like it had ever been seen before, or since. People often refer back to the industrial revolution and clearly, it had made a difference in terms of family life.
