that Abner Doubleday, a Union officer, came up with the game in Cooperstown New York during 1839, but there is no evidence to document that fact ("History Class," 2007). That said, baseball has been popularized in the Northeast for both men and women alike. In fact, the timeline would suggest that if baseball was invented during the early to mid 1800s, womens baseball would begin shortly thereafter. The first official womens baseball game took place in 1866. It was at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York that saw womens amateur teams play; this set a precedent for other schools down the road ("A Little History," 2007). However, the teams would be criticized by Dr. Webster when a female player hurt her leg running; he said that the game was simply too violent for women ("A Little History," 2007). This was a time shortly after the Civil War and it was also a time when women were not treated very well. It would be some time before women would attain the right to vote for example. Womens baseball would begin in New York and similarly in New York about this time, women were concerned with equal rights. There had been a Womens Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848 for example (Roberts, 2005). The womens movement had begun and baseball was an option for women too. In 1875, a group of women who were actually promoted by men, were dubbed the Blondes and Brunettes ("A Little History," 2007). They were not good players but formed the teams to entertain the crowds ("A Little History," 2007). This was more of a show than a sporting event.
