likely most, people argue that women are not geared, mentally, psychologically or physically, for true warfare and that women should never be allowed to fight in combat on the front
lines. There are likely many women who believe that women should never fight in combat as well. However, women have been fighting on the front lines of combat since perhaps
the beginning of time. There have always been women who were passionate enough about the cause to fight, and in some nations women naturally fight alongside men in many situations.
The following paper argues that if women desire to be on the front lines of combat they should be given that freedom/right. Women on the Front Lines of
Combat One article that will be examined comes from 1996, prior to the war in Iraq, but also close to the war in relationship to the Gulf War. The author
notes that, "There are approximately 32,000 women in the U.S. military, comprising about 13 percent of the total U.S. Armed Forces (Defense Almanac 1995)" (Willens, 1996). This author then points
out the fact that back in 1970 the military, all branches, only possessed 1.4 percent of its total in women and as such that percentage has increased dramatically (Willens, 1996).
In 1990 that number stood at 13 percent (Willens, 1996). In 2006 it was 15 percent (United States Census Bureau, 2006). As mentioned, women have been in wars likely
since the beginning of time, or time involving warfare. Willens notes the following in relationship to some of that history: "When discussing the history of women in combat, one might
think of Joan of Arc who in 1429, at age 17, successfully led French troops into battle against the English. Hundreds of women disguised themselves as men to fight in
