The French Revolution was the impetus for tremendous political and cultural transformation in France. This transformation was sought by men and women alike who refused to continue
living lives that they found unacceptable. When we think of the French Revolution, too often we think that it was a revolution that was perpetrated by men alone.
Nothing could be further from the truth! Women played a diversity of roles in the revolution. They were protesters, combatants, and enablers. They also served as support
networks for the resources that were needed to pull off the revolution. Women, therefore, were very much a part of the French Revolution. This was true both in
the turbulent years of the actual revolution and in the many years leading up to the eruption of the revolution. When considering the
role of women during the French Revolution it is mandatory that both positive and negative roles be considered. Some say, for example, that the causative factors of the Revolution
can be traced back over one-hundred years before the Revolution actually erupted. This would take us back to time when Louis XIV was only a child or at best
a very young and inexperienced man. This was a time when, although he was officially the king, it was in actuality his mother and not him that was making
political decisions. This arrangement continued, in fact, until Louis was twenty-three years of age and his mother finally died! Unfortunately, not all of the decisions that she made
