were not as serious (Gora, 1982). Today, there are documented cases of female serial killers and there is in general a greater female presence in the penal system. Hence, one
can imagine that theory has changed over the years to incorporate the fact that there is an increasingly larger female prison population. In congruence with the changing needs, the prisons
have been altered to accommodate the desires and requirements of female prisoners. New prisons have been built, and some states have decided to create facilities where women can be with
their newborns. Of course, for the most part, while theory has been altered, and things have clearly changed in general, the needs of women are not adequately addressed.
II. The Needs of the Female Prisoner: How Men and Women Differ The greater number of female offenders may be attributable to a variety of
social factors. Either way, the fact that females have special needs, particularly where children are concerned, suggests new challenges for criminal justice. Pregnancy is certainly a major challenge. Because of
this, women have greater and different health care needs. If a woman is pregnant in prison, the life she is carrying must be protected. Therefore, the state has an additional
responsibility to assure that she is not hurt. Many convicts are hurt or killed in the system, but it behooves prisons to see to it that pregnant women are given
some additional protection to assure that the baby is safe. Also, what to do with the baby is also challenging. In some cases, women are allowed to keep their babies
