This is something that many older people find unusual, but as women have become doctors and lawyers and have taken on other roles once associated with maleness, they have also
found positions in the highest levels of the church. Of course, it is sometimes hard to break through old patterns. For example, much of the church does not accept homosexuality,
but many gay men and lesbians want to go to church. Some gay churches have sprang up, but clearly, they reinterpret the bible and are not considered mainline Christianity. Of
course, each sect interprets the bible and other documents in its own way, which is why there are many denominations of Protestantism for example. Some Christians believe that a man
should not take advice from a woman, and rather that women must follow the dictates of men. This is something noted in the bible, at least according to some interpretations.
The fact that women are in subservient positions is not an excuse that churches use to keep women down. Actually, they interpret the bible in such a way as to
render certain things acceptable and certain things not, and part of the evaluation does include notions of women and how they should be embraced by the church. Although it is
true that some denominations do not allow women to run things, many denominations such as the United Methodists do see female preachers quite a bit. It is ordinary now, whereas
it once was rather surprising. Women have made great strides in other areas of life as well as religion. It is a particular struggle when religion is the area of
focus due to religious law which supersedes secular law. In other words, discrimination statutes do not apply. Even if someone could sue a church for discrimination, it would go against
