examining women of all races, is a topic that is incredibly detailed and rich. Women, however, were essentially second class citizens no matter where they lived and no matter what ethnicity they were. The following paper compares and contrasts women in the 17th and 18th centuries in England and the colonies, and also discusses women of other ethnic origins than English or colonist. Women in the 17th and 18th Centuries First and foremost it is perhaps important to note that from the early 1600s to the early 1700s not much changed for women and womens rights. In fact, one could claim that their rights became less as society changed and moved towards the Victorian Era that would arise in the 1800s. And, in relationship to women of different ethnicity, namely the Native and the Black women, their rights did not likely change at all. The Natives were slowly and almost ultimately destroyed and the African women were kept as slaves until the second half of the 19th century and as such they did not have any rights in the colonies. And, in England slavery was not abolished until the latter part of the 18th century so it is likely that the conditions for African women in England were essentially the same as they were in the colonies, aside from the fact that slaves were far more important in the colonies, or became more important through the 17th and into the 18th century. In light of these facts, however, one can clearly see that white women had far more rights than Native or African women, and this would continue to be the case, many would argue, until modern times, and continues today.
