World War II spanned a six year period between September 1, 1939 (the date of Germanys invasion of Poland) and September 2, 1945 (the date of the Japanese surrender).
The U.S. actually resisted entering into the fray of World War II until quite late in the game. The United States decision to enter the turmoil would be
the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. The United States, at first neutral to the events which rapidly unfolded during World War II, entered the battle December 8, 19411.
Japan, angered by United States resistance to their expansion into Southeast Asia, had attacked the United States Pacific fleet (moored in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii) the previous day (December 7,
1941)2. For the United States to incur a direct attack on its shores was perceived as sacrilege. Americans from all walks of life, both men and women, were
outraged and flung themselves into the war effort. Womens roles during this turbulent time in history are particularly interesting. Those roles were filled not just by U.S. women
but by women from many diverse nations as everyone lended a hand to whatever cause it was that held their allegiance. Women played
many critical roles in World War II. Their impact would have long-lasting effects. This is true not just from the perspective that their roles aided the war effort
but also from the perspective of what it meant for gender relations over the long term. Other women around the world, of course, were caught up in the war
