and some level of power. In Voltaires classic "Candide" the novel only presents the reader with a few women, but all of these women are truly illustrative of the conditions
experienced by women during this time period. The following paper examines the portrayal of women in Voltaires novel and then examines women in the 18th century. Women in
Voltaires "Candide" In the story of Candide there is one particular woman, perhaps the main female character in the novel, who is, in
the beginning, in a position of some promise as it relates to her future. Cun?gonde is the young woman and she is something of an ignorant woman whom Candide loves.
She is from a wealthy family and is clearly expected to behave in a certain way. She is caught kissing Candide and he is sent away. Candide later learns that
her family was essentially slaughtered and she was sexually abused: "A tall Bulgarian soldier, six feet high, perceiving that I had fainted away at this sight, attempted to ravish me"
(Voltaire Chapter 8). She began living the life of a prisoner of war for the most part. One author notes she was "ill-used by others" and that she is essentially
"shallow and featherbrained" (Cummings). Throughout the novel she suffers great abuse and is essentially nothing more than a worn out woman at the end, older than her years.
