all. This paper considers the way women are portrayed in Vertigo and To Die For.mjep"trayhal of women in film often shows them as victims who need to be rescued by
the hero; these are "ic adjustment _______ Discussion Vertigo is now widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, as well as Hitchcocks masterpiece. The woman in question,
Kim Novak, plays a dual role, first as Madeleine, who seduces - and unexpectedly falls in love with her "mark," Scotty Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart); second as Judy, who, as herself,
cannot stay away from Scotty and precipitates the tragedy that ends the film. Judy is real, Madeleine does not exist. Judy is hired by Madeleines husband, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore),
to pretend to be her so that hell have an alibi when he murders the real Madeleine. Therefore, when Scotty falls in love with Madeleine, he is in effect falling
in love with a ghost, an idea that Hitchcock makes explicitly clear in the scene in which Scotty makes Judy over into Madeleine: when he first sees her after the
transformation, she comes to him out of a green, glowing light that seems otherworldly. The film is interesting in terms of its treatment of Madeleine/Judy, because while Madeleine seems
to be manipulating Scotty (and she is), she is doing so because of her deal with Elster. In effect, she is in a position she cannot escape: if she crosses
Elster she might well fear for her life. The man is planning to kill his wife after all. He would probably not hesitate to do the same to her if
