whose job it was to wade through rice paddies in the burning son and driving rain, looking for "Charlie." This paper discusses what the three women in the book symbolize,
how they change the men around them and what purpose they serve in the story. Discussion The first woman we meet is Martha, Lt. Jimmy Crosss girlfriend (OBrien). We never
actually see her because shes waiting back in the States, but her presence is palpable: every time the platoon settles down for the night, Jimmy pulls out her letters and
re-reads them (OBrien). He is in the midst of one of these reveries when Ted Lavender is shot and killed, sending Jimmy into a spiral of guilt, since he was
daydreaming about Martha rather than watching out for his men (OBrien). "He felt shame. He hated himself He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender
was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war (OBrien). Martha is a symbol of
what we might call the "all-American girl." Cross speculates endlessly on whether or not she is a virgin and its impossible to tell if he is enchanted with the idea
that she is pure, or if hes titillated by the idea that shes had lovers. Most of all though, she symbolizes home for him. And home is America as we
