North and South, Europe and Africa, we see many other subtle elements come into play, one of which is competition: "The competition between the north and south in both the
minds of Mustafa and the narrator is present throughout the novel" (Raun). Another One of these elements involves the role of women in the novel. Mustafa is one character who
seems to see women as creatures that are perhaps not worthy of any notice for the most part. This is a very powerful theme in the novel and the following
paper addresses the role of women in Salihs novel from different perspectives. Mustafas Perception and Treatment of Women In first understanding how Mustafa sees women we look at his
