Roman Catholic church has been particularly harsh in terms of womens ordination and things of that nature. There has always been controversy in terms of what place women should have in religion. After all, the Bible has been cited for numerous references that put the woman second. The wife must obey her husband is such an example. But there is continual controversy as Catholic women could only look forward to becoming nuns when they truly longed to change the church itself. Others left the sect for the more accepting Protestant religions. First, we will take a look at women who lived during the nineteenth century and their struggles for equality in a male dominated area. Next, the paper will explore modern American female preachers and finally, the ultimate question of why problems exist in this realm. Many Christian religions will be looked at as it relates to womens roles. II. Nineteenth Century Religious Women Women missionaries have always been around. Mary Lucinda Bonney was one of them and had accomplished much in the early 1800s. Born in Hamilton, New York in 1816 she was educated at Emma Willards Troy Female Seminary, from which she graduated in 1835 (Pilgrim). She first became a school teacher and held positions in various states.She also taught at a different seminary and later began her own .In Philadelphia, Bonney and a friend opened the Chestnut Street Female Seminary . Bonney was active in the home and foreign mission activities of her Baptist church and of the interdenominational Womans Union Missionary Society of America for Heathen Lands. She was always heavily involved in religion and teaching others. Mary Bonney soon began to become concerned about the dilemmas faced by the American Indian.
