Psycho is one of the most terrifying films ever made, not only because of Hitchcocks skill and great performances from the case, but also because he was dealing with the evil that sometimes lives in men. The danger here wasnt a monster from outer space, but a psychologically twisted young man whose insanity led him to murder. Because its potentially real, its very frightening. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is a secretary in a small real-estate firm, a dead-end job that shes had for ten years (Dirks). She is involved in an illicit affair with Sam (John Gavin), a divorced man who seems to like the relationship just the way it is; Marion wants to get married but Sam has a million excuses as to why it wont work (Dirks). As the film opens, they have just finished having sex in a seedy hotel on her lunch hour-a shocker for 1960 (Dirks). They are fighting once more about the fact that their relationship isnt going anywhere. In short, Marion has no future either professionally or personally; she is trapped. This may be one of Hitchcocks most highly symbolic films, and the symbolism starts with her name. Dirks suggests that spelling her name with an "o" instead of an "a" (Marian) shows how empty she is. Also, the fact that shes named for a bird becomes very important when she checks into the Bates Motel and meets Norman Bates. Norman is a taxidermist, and he has stuffed animals, and especially birds, all over the facility. Her surname immediately classifies Marion as a bird, a weak creature that will fall prey to Normans sick fantasies. Marion goes back to the office where her boss, Mr. George Lowery (Vaughn Taylor) is conversing with an unpleasant oil millionaire named Tom Cassidy (Frank Albertson), ...
