It is, on one hand, a story about how oppressed women are financially in the social world that is controlled by a patriarchal society, and on the other hand, a story that offers hope for looking beyond social restraints placed upon women. In the following paper we examine the female characters in Austens novel, discussing how the role of women in the story perform many different functions. Women in Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth Bennet is the primary character in Austens novel. All that takes place in the story essentially revolves around her or involves her in some way. She is one of five girls in the family and possesses a great wit as well as a great intelligence. She is considered pretty as well. In many ways Elizabeth stands as the one woman in the novel who symbolizes some change in the patriarchal social world. She claims to focus on those things that are important in an individual, traits such as virtue and good manners. She is not overly concerned with someones money or by their social position in life thus making her something of a unique woman in her times. Almost all of the women in Austens novel are obsessed with getting a husband who is equal to them or perhaps wealthier than their families. Elizabeth is a woman who is not concerned with these things and feels that it is somewhat unjust for women to be required to marry in order to survive. In these regards she is somewhat ahead of her time and she symbolizes change and equality in many ways, as it relates to the role of women.
