fact, it seems a predominant issue with man as well, indicating a sense of need, as it involves finding oneself a partner for life, for all of mankind. Interestingly enough,
this particular topic, as it relates to women, has often gotten a bad reputation as a fact which should not exist. A woman is supposed to have more interests and
pursue more with her life than merely finding a partner. However, this has not always been the case. Throughout history marriage has been seen as the only positive option for
women. To be single, a spinster, is to be useless and worthless. Only through marriage can a woman find her place in the world, or so it was believed for
much of history. Two books which focus a great deal on this reality are Jane Austens "Pride and Prejudice" and Helen Fieldings "Bridget Joness Diary." Austens book, written quite
a long time ago, was written in a time when women were expected to marry. This was the only avenue of pursuit for women and it was the only way
to ensure their future. Without marriage they were nothing to society and nothing to themselves as well. Such realities are clearly reflected in Austens book. And, such realities are subtly
reflected in Fieldings book as well, despite the fact that it was written only a few years ago. In the following paper we examine the two books individually and then
discuss their content as it involves the pursuit of a partner in life. Pride and Prejudice Marriage was certainly the main pursuit in Austens novel. It illustrated how
the women of the time period had no other option if they wanted to live well, or even adequately. If they were not married they must rely on family members
