examines the role of women in Papadiamantis story "Fonissa" (The Murderess). Fonissa Papdiamantis story is perhaps, above all, a story that illustrates the struggles of women under a
dowry system in Greek society. This particular theme is very strong for it is a system that has controlled women in this region since, perhaps, before recorded history. Women, through
a dowry system, had to be wealthy if they expected to have more than a impoverished life. If they did not wish to live in ultimate struggle and misery they
needed to possess some wealth. And, the only way to use that wealth towards a happy life was through marriage. In essence, women were ultimately controlled and oppressed through this
particular system as it relates to this country in the story. It is the primary focus, or foundation, as it relates to women and their oppressive state. In this
particular theme we see that the role of women is to illustrate the social and cultural realities of Greece. It lays down a foundation from which we can better understand
the roles of men and women and the cultural history of this place. It also offers a basis for perhaps sympathizing with the women in the story. Through illustrating just
how essentially helpless and powerless these women were, we are given to possess sympathy for their plight. Without our sympathies the story would not prove successful. This is because the
story is about a murderess. If we possessed no sympathy or understanding of the plight of women in this region we would not care what happened to the women and
