of these stories lies a foundation that is deeply connected with women, demonstrating the importance of women. The following paper compares and contrasts the importance of women in both plays.
Women in Othello and Fences The primary character in Shakespeares play is Othello and the primary character in Wilsons play is Troy. The plays revolve around the existence,
and struggles, of these two men. But, at the basic foundation of their existence and struggle lies a woman, or women. While both of these men work hard at presenting
themselves as strong and masculine men, they are incredibly reliant on women in many ways. In Othellos story there is Desdemona, who is ultimately the entire focus of the
struggles of the plot. Desdemona is a young woman who has perhaps gone against her fathers wishes to marry Othello. Othello adores her but it is soon realized that Othello
is also a very insecure man, even if he is a prince. He is lured into thinking that Desdemona has been cheating on him. He succumbs to the taunts and
words of Iago, believing his wife to be unfaithful. Because of his love for her he demonstrates his weakness in jealousy, uncertain of her love despite her honorable position. Because
he doubts her, believing the words of others, one can see that he is a very insecure man where his love is concerned. In the case of Troy he
is a man who feels that women are perhaps property, but yet there is something about women he needs, perhaps much like a boy. He relies on the fact that
his wife, Rose, is always there, and he also takes advantage of his position as a man and has an affair, which leads to a birth of a daughter and
